What is Anki?
Anki is a software and an app that allows its user to make highly sophisticated digital flashcards.
Why is Anki worth using?
There are almost too many benefits to say for this one. It doesn't look pretty, but it WORKS.
For starters, making digital flashcards is much faster than making them by hand. Writing things down isn't to remember them from writing; it's writing them to study later. Thus, the tiny boost in memory you get from writing flashcards by hand is drastically outweighed by how much faster you can make and study digital ones.
Additionally, you can access your Anki account from any device on the planet after syncing it to the Anki cloud.
Anki also allows you to add add-ons, which are upgrades to the software that people make. All of them are free to access from the Anki add-on website.
But perhaps the most impressive feature about Anki, and why so many medical students use it, is that it has a spaced-repetition algorithm built into it. This means you only have to make the flashcards, and it gets you to practice actively recalling the information without having to think about which cards to study and when.
This also means you spend more time on the content you don't know as well, drastically improving your studying efficiency. This tool is part of the 2-Hour Study System by UofTearless and was paramount to Simon's success in school.
Simon used Anki to decrease his studying hours from 8 hours/day to 2 hours/day, while skyrocketing his grades.
Not only that, but with all the different note types, there are many ways to make flashcards that aren't feasible with physical flashcards.
Now you might be wondering, "Why is this better than Quizlet?" Simply put, Quizlet does not incorporate spaced repetition into its features. This means you still have to think about what to study and when. Anki makes it impossible to forget if you do it daily.
Additional Benefits :)
Anki is open source and FREE on desktop. The iPhone app is paid, but completely worth it. If it saves you 2 hours (equate your time to minimum wage), it's already worth it.
Over the past 3 years, it's saved Simon 1000+ hours. Literally, we can track his metrics.
If you use flashcards, which you should, get it. This is our favorite software, and there is NO BETTER software out there for students! Hence, Anki receives the UofTearless Favorite badge!
Happy studying!
